The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our solar system, and it is estimated to contain between 100 billion and 400 billion stars.

Galaxies also contain various structures, such as spiral arms, which are long, winding structures that extend out from the center of some galaxies, and galactic disks, which are flat, rotating structures that contain most of the stars and gas in a galaxy.

There are three main types of galaxies based on their shape and structure:

  1. Spiral galaxies: These galaxies have a characteristic pinwheel-like shape, with a central bulge and arms that spiral outwards. The arms contain stars, gas, and dust, and are often sites of intense star formation. Our own Milky Way galaxy is a spiral galaxy.
  2. Elliptical galaxies: These galaxies are shaped like a flattened sphere or football and do not have well-defined arms. They are composed mainly of old stars and contain little gas or dust. Elliptical galaxies are classified according to their degree of flattening, with E0 being the most spherical and E7 being the most flattened.
  3. Irregular galaxies: These galaxies do not have a defined shape and often appear chaotic. They are often small, contain a lot of gas and dust, and have a high rate of star formation.
In addition to these main types, there are also several less common types of galaxies, including:
  1. Lenticular galaxies: These galaxies have a central bulge like ellipticals but also contain a flattened disk of stars and gas like spirals.
  2. Dwarf galaxies: These are small galaxies that contain fewer stars and less gas than larger galaxies. They are often found orbiting larger galaxies.
  3. Ring galaxies: These galaxies have a distinctive ring-like shape, with a central region containing few stars and a bright, circular ring of stars around it.
  4. Barred spiral galaxies: These galaxies have a central bar-like structure connecting the spiral arms.
